Site characterisation

A vision on how a site or an area will be developed

The built environment is a key aspect of everyday life for billions of people. Our aim is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life, which we can influence at different levels (regional, city, district and building). Through our multidisciplinary approach, we provide a comprehensive understanding of a site’s constraints and opportunities, and work with designers to develop masterplans and resilient infrastructures.

Service details

Site characterization is the initial step to develop a comprehensive understanding of the geologic, hydrologic and engineering properties of a site. These include soil, rock, groundwater conditions and the presence of underground infrastructures - such as utilities, underground structures, tunnels etc. - that can impact site conditions.  Site characterization also includes the spatial and temporal assessment of contaminants when a site is affected by pollution.

The initial activity of characterization is fundamental, as a wrong understanding of the site can impact negatively on the project.

The activity is carried out in accordance with the RINA governance model, which safeguards impartiality and prevents conflict of interest situations.
