The challenge

Energy data sharing is crucial to achieve the energy transition of the European Union.

The promotion of the green energy transition through the European Energy Data Space represents one of the most promising opportunities to address problems related to climate change.

In this context, the opportunity to work with a common data space involving both public and private entities, or an ecosystem of federated data spaces, can make a difference.

In line with the European Data Strategy, DATA CELLAR project started the 1st of June 2022 and it will last 42 months, until the 31st December 2025 (3 years and a half). 

The goal is to create a single energy data market to: 

• Secure data sharing at the European level: through the creation of a shared, linked data spaces it will be possible to accelerate European competitiveness, digital transformation, and societal progress for shaping the future towards a Digital Europe
• Involve energy communities as pivotal for energy transition: the development of Energy Communities will promote collective self-consumption, more flexibility and equity in energy services. Moreover, it will pave the way for a sustainable future for EU citizens that will be made possible through ad-hoc funding and investment schemes for the reorganization and reconstruction of energy systems. 

Our role in the project

We are the project coordinator of Data Cellar.

Therefore, we will be responsible for the overall project management, by working on the definition of boundary conditions and engineering requirements to define the initial framework and to support the project activities.

We will also coordinate the development of the data space, the roles of the consortium partners. 

Furthermore, we will be engaged in the validation phase by monitoring the effectiveness of its use in VCs and in the design of the replication strategies. 

Conclusions

DATA CELLAR will create a public energy dataspace to support the development and to foster the creation of Local Energy Communities in Europe with the goal of promoting EU Energy System Green and Digital in Europe. 

We will work together with other partners to:

• Make high-quality data available and accessible through standardized and interoperable common European data spaces to unlock the potential of data in realizing the European Green Deal
• Drive the use of quality data, data analytics models and energy-efficient AI-based solutions for sustainable decision making
• Promote the use of digital twin and sustainability of AI applications by encouraging the development, sharing, and use of energy-efficient algorithms
• Exploiting the full potential of technologies such as AI and Blockchain to support new and developing energy communities to better manage their energy.
