Solidification

Thin slab and strip casting technologies

Solidification technology is critical for industries that have a manufacturing cycle that uses metallic materials.

RINA researchers thoroughly analyse the solidification phenomena both at the macroscopic and the microscopic scale, by studying the microstructure evolution in terms of temperature history, stress in the growing shell, phase distribution, precipitates formation, etc., even for niche phenomena, such as those occurring at physical interfaces or in the bulk of a stirred melted alloy.

Two of the highlights of our R&D activity in this area are the thin slab and strip casting technologies, which are employed in innovative stainless steel industrial production processes.
