Certification of the management system for the reduction of food waste

The "GO 2 FOOD SAVING" service for the measurement, prevention and reduction of food waste

GO 2 FOOD SAVINGFood waste has reached very high levels in Europe and worldwide, negatively impacting the environment, the economy and society. To date, the largest quantities of food waste come from the domestic sector, from the catering sector and from retail. It is therefore necessary to make efforts to reduce problems in waste management, greenhouse gas emissions and related social and economic impacts, promoting sustainable practices throughout the supply chain to guarantee responsible consumption.

In this perspective, RINA has created the "GO 2 FOOD SAVING" (GO2FS) certification service, which defines the minimum requirements of a management system aimed at achieving an efficient reduction of food losses and waste through a responsible approach aimed at optimizing processes and resources, improving the related socio-environmental and economic impacts.

The GO2FS Standard, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the principles contained in the Farm to Fork, is applicable to all organizations of any type and size, public or private, involved in every stage of the agri-food chain, including direct or indirect catering and Public Administration services.

Regulatory focus

The new waste legislation requires Member States to implement national food waste prevention programmes. In 2017, the Commission adopted EU guidelines clarifying the relevant measures set out in EU rules (e.g. food safety, labelling, VAT, etc.) in order to contribute and remove any existing food redistribution barriers within the current EU regulatory framework. The application of this Standard does not exempt the Organization from complying with mandatory requirements, such as laws, regulations, etc., of an international, national or local nature applicable to its products, services, personnel.
