EN 1090: steel structural components

Inspection of the production facility and continuous surveillance

Overview

Steel and aluminium structural components, placed on the European market as construction products, must be CE-marked.
RINA issues declarations of conformity for standard and non-standard structural components and kits, or assemblies of several components for permanent incorporation in construction works.
This certification complies with EN 1090-1 “Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures - Part 1: Requirements for conformity assessment of structural components”.

Service Details

EN 1090-1 requires that materials be certified by an independent Notified Body which must ensure the producer fulfils the following obligations:

EN 1090-1 is associated with support standards EN 1090-2 and EN 1090-3 which contains requirements for executing structures in steel and aluminium respectively, while for the structural design and calculations relative to constructions reference is made to the applicable sections of the Eurocodes.

Deliverables

The activities performed for certification in conformity with EN 1090-1 are based on the following elements:

Q&A

What is CE-marking applied to pursuant to EN 1090-1?
CE-marking applies to all structural steel and aluminium components, to kits and steel components used in compound steel-concrete structures (e.g.: factory sheds, roofs, cantilever roofs, stairs, structures for residential or office buildings, bridges, pylons, general-purpose building components, etc.).

Is a Notified Body required?

The Notified Body must certify the factory production control (FPC) implemented by the producer.

Does CE-marking pursuant to EN 1090 replace the "Processing Centre" certification procedure with the Central Technical Service?
Yes, with the application of CE-marking on products pursuant to EN 1090-1, the procedural activity declaration obligations established in the Technical Rules for Construction (§11.3.4.10 of Italian Ministerial Decree of 14/01/2008) for processing centres in the sphere of metal structural steel no longer apply.

For welding processes, which part of ISO 3834 must a producer refer to?
The choice of the level depends on the execution class (EXC) of the work (§7.1 of EN 1090-2/3).
