PED Certification of Pressure Equipment and Assemblies

Certify the quality of your products in accordance with the PED Directive (2014/68/EU)

PED certificationPED certification (Pressure Equipment Directive) is essential for the production and marketing of pressure equipment and assemblies intended for the European market. Regulated by Directive 2014/68/EU, this procedure ensures that every product meets the Essential Safety Requirements (ESR) provided by the European legislation, thus safeguarding the safety of operators and consumers.

The CE marking, obtained through PED certification, is mandatory for all equipment with category > 1 and a maximum allowable pressure (PS) greater than 0.5 bar intended for use in an EU country: it is an essential requirement to allow the free circulation and use of such products within the EU.

RINA is a notified body that supports manufacturers in certification activities, testing, and verification of factory production control.

Affixing the CE marking, accompanied by the EU Declaration of Conformity, represents the official declaration that the product complies with European legislation and is suitable for safe use throughout the European territory.

Advantages

- Free access to the single European market, removing trade barriers between EU countries.

- Guarantee of full product compliance with the Essential Safety Requirements “ESR” under Directive 2014/68/EU (PED).

- Obtaining official certification issued by a notified body, ensuring impartiality, technical competence, and international recognition.

- Issuance of instructions for the correct use of the equipment.

- Increased trust among consumers and sector operators.

- Strengthening of the manufacturing company’s reputation, demonstrating a commitment to quality and transparency.

Certification process

- Completion of the information questionnaire.

- Receipt of the service proposal.

- Preparation of documentation: collection and analysis of the technical file according to the PED Directive.

- Verification and technical tests: carrying out material tests, pressure tests and/or relevant technical inspections.

- Issuance of certification: official certificate issued and authorization for CE marking following an independent technical review.

- Annual surveillance, continuous assessment and verification of factory production control, including regular inspections of the production site according to the chosen PED assessment module requirements.

Regulatory focus

In the field of pressure equipment, the European regulatory framework has undergone significant evolution in recent decades. The need to ensure safety and the free movement of products within the European Union led, in 1997, to the adoption of the first PED Directive (Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC), designed to harmonize safety requirements among different Member States and simplify the single market.

Subsequently, the Directive was updated with 2014/68/EU, which incorporated new needs for regulatory clarity, traceability, and alignment with other European regulations, such as Regulation (EC) No. 765/2008 and Decision No. 768/2008/EC. Today, the PED is the main reference for the design, manufacture, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies, establishing the Essential Safety Requirements that all products intended for the European market must comply with.

Frequently Asked Questions

CE marking is the visual symbol that demonstrates a product’s compliance with the Essential Safety Requirements established by the PED Directive.

It must be affixed on a nameplate securely attached to the pressure equipment/assembly, in a visible, legible, and indelible manner, or on a label applied to it.

The PED covers all pressure equipment and assemblies with PS > 0.5 bar, such as:

- Filters.
- Heat exchangers.
- Steam boilers.
- Vessels (excluding simple vessels regulated by Directive EU 2014/29/EU).
- Piping within plant boundaries.
- Fire extinguishers.
- Refrigeration plants, chillers.
- Oil & gas treatment plants.
