A further step towards a Water Smart Society

For many years, water has been one of the key topics of EU environmental policies.

Since 2000, the Water Framework Directive has served as the primary legislation for water protection in Europe. Its aim is to guarantee a holistic approach to water management, respecting the integrity of entire ecosystems. This is achieved by effectively controlling individual pollutants and establishing appropriate regulatory standards.

In October 2022, the Commission adopted a proposal to revise the lists of pollutants in surface water and groundwater . Some additional amendments are also being proposed to require the member states to implement measures that meet the quality standards for the additional pollutants and to provide their monitoring data on a more frequent basis.

We strongly believe in the importance of this mission, which is why we have taken part in the Lighthouse project RHE-MEDiation (Grant Agreement 101113045). This project we are coordinating aims to establish a responsive hub focused on long-term governance, with the mission of reducing chemical pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, including high concentrations in known hotspots.

To further strengthen our commitment in this direction, we have recently become members of Water Europe, the European Technology Platform for Water. Its goal is to achieve a Water-Smart Society where the true value of water is recognized and realized, and all available water sources are managed to prevent water scarcity and water pollution.

Our membership in Water Europe, along with our pilot project RHE-MEDIATION, marks a significant step towards the development of new projects and activities that we will undertake in the upcoming period to actively contribute to the mission of achieving a Water-Smart Society.
