RINA has developed a Biodiversity Management Capacity Building Programme for local authorities to raise awareness on biodiversity in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures

Since October 2017, RINA has been developing the Biodiversity Management Capacity Building Programme under a contract with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD): it is a Technical Cooperation assignment funded by EBRD donors and developed according the Terms of Reference developed by the EBRD.

On 11-12 of April 2018, our Biodiversity team organized a Workshop in Cairo, Egypt, providing an opportunity for participants, including authorities involved in environmental and petroleum sectors and the wider O&G sector players in the Country, to discuss biodiversity issues and best management practices.

Specifically, the workshop brought together the Egyptian Ministry of Environment and its environmental affairs agency (EEAA), the Ministry of Petroleum and its key entities EGAS, EGPC and GANOPE, and other key players in the O&G sector in Egypt, such as ENI-IEOC and PETROBEL, EDISON Egypt Branch, DANA GAS, PICO-CHEIRON, Amal petroleum Company (AMAPETCO), Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO), East Zeit Petroleum Company (ZEITCO), PETROGULF MISR, General Petroleum Company (GPC).

The Workshop was an important turning point for the preparation of the second phase of the Project, which includes a dedicated biodiversity risk assessment and biodiversity baseline techniques training to be delivered to participants selected among local authorities and O&G stakeholders staff. This second phase will be carried out over the coming months.

Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services loss is a globally recognized issue. Additionally impacts to these components pose risks to business, including potential reputational damages and expensive permitting delays. In this framework RINA is committed to demonstrating their knowledge and expertise to Clients, and supporting them to meet global sustainable development goals and avoiding and minimizing social and environmental issues.
