The European Commission endorses, for the third consecutive year, the EU Projects Zone featured at the exhibition floor of European Utility Week and POWERGEN Europe, an event that aims at showcasing the research and findings of several EU funded projects focusing on digitally supporting the energy transition.

We are glad to announce that Giannicola Loriga – Head of RINA Corporate Research & Development Project Technical Coordination-  will present the latest advancements of SMILE H2020 Project (funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 731249) at the EU Projects Zone.

Moreover, Giannicola will hold a presentation about SMILE technological and non-technological solutions in the framework of the session entitled “Storage services for network operators”, taking place on 14 November from 11.00 to 11.20 in the EU Project Zone Theatre.

In particular, the SMILE solutions, targeting distribution grids to enable demand response schemes, smart grid functionalities and storage and energy system integration, are adapted to local circumstances with the final objective of paving the way for the introduction of the innovative solutions in the market in the near future.

They vary from integration of different battery technologies, power to heat, power to fuel, integration of electric vehicles (both cars and boats), aggregator approach to demand side management (DSM) and predictive algorithms.

The proposed SMILE cross-functional and modular control and automation framework as well as plug-and-play and scalable hardware and software solutions make distribution in an electricity grid more agile and competitive thanks to the fusion of actual real-time data with predicted ones from simulations.

To this end, three large-scale pilot projects are under implementation in three island locations with similar topographic characteristics but different policies and regulations, representing the majority of the EU energy markets and offering excellent demonstration settings to deliver maximum impact in terms of replicability: Orkneys (UK), Samsø (DK) and Madeira (PT).
