RINA as roadmap leader in Hydrogen Europe

28 Jun 2023

A long-lasting commitment to hydrogen industry

Hydrogen Europe is a European association representing stakeholders in the hydrogen industry, including producers, distributors, technology providers, and research organizations.

The primary goal of Hydrogen Europe is to promote hydrogen as a key solution to achieve Europe's decarbonization objectives by providing clean and sustainable energy for various sectors, including energy, mobility, and industry.

We are pleased to announce that four RINA people have been appointed as Roadmap Leaders in Hydrogen Europe:

- Natalia Pierozzi, RINA Carbon Reduction Excellence Senior Technical Manager, is the leader of the Electrolysis roadmap (under the technical committee of Hydrogen Production). This technology is key to enabling a decarbonized energy system, enabling increasing proportions of intermittent renewable generation, while advancing hydrogen as an energy vector. The potential for innovation to reduce costs and improve efficiency is considerable.

- Patrizio Di Francesco, RINA Special Projects North Europe Area Business Development Manager, is leader of the Waterborne roadmap (under the technical committee of Mobility). Hydrogen technology will enable maritime transport to reduce rapidly its contribution to overall GHG emissions, as it provides 0% emissions. This will strengthen and consolidate the European maritime hydrogen value chain.

- Andrea Fonzo, RINA Energy Industry Cluster Director, is leader of the Gas grid roadmap (under the technical committee of Distribution). With hydrogen and the continued use of
the gas infrastructure the enormous storage potential of the existing gas infrastructure will play a vital role in a low carbon future. There are two ways hydrogen can be used to directly
decarbonise gas infrastructure: blending H2 with natural gas and conversion to 100% hydrogen grid.Innovations are needed to ensure accurate measurement
and billing including digitalisation.

- Antonio Manna, RINA Head of Training & Competence Certification Strategic Centre, is the leader of the Education & Public awareness roadmap (under the technical committee of Cross-cutting). A
number of studies have been conducted on the social recognition and acceptance of hydrogen energy According to the results of some of these survey based studies, participants tend to have lower levels of knowledge about hydrogen technology although confidence in the technology and acceptability of its use, in mobility for example, tend to be higher. Educational materials for schools and
universities have also been developed, as well as training programmes in areas such as safety These aspects need to be further extended and have to be rolled out in more languages to further strengthen the access of the public to such material

The appointment of our colleagues as Roadmap Leaders in Hydrogen Europe marks another significant milestone for RINA in the hydrogen sector.

We are committed to driving advancements in the hydrogen industry through various initiatives, including research, technological innovation, and collaboration with key stakeholders.

Our expertise and capabilities span across the entire hydrogen value chain, encompassing production, storage, distribution, and utilization.
