Let’s accelerate Africa’s energy transformation

RES4Africa (Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa) is a foundation that works to support Africa’s energy transition and ensure access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all.

As a member of RES4Africa, RINA shares the organization's values and mission. Moreover, we are also proud to be a member of the African Hydrogen Partnership, and maintain a strong presence in Africa through our local offices. Our commitment to promoting clean energy technologies aligns with Res4Africa's goal of creating an enabling environment for sustainable investments in Africa's energy sector.

Moreover, our Raimondo De Laurentis, RINA Green Energy Solutions Senior Director, is a member of RES4Africa Executive Committee.

Our commitment in 2022

Our Natalia Pierozzi, RINA Senior Technical Manager, took part in several events to promote innovative solutions in the energy transition sector:

  • RES4Africa side event at Zero Emission Mediterranean 2022 on October 13th: during the panel discussion on the role of innovation in the green energy journey of Mediterranean countries, the discussion focused on electrolyzers, and the challenges and opportunities related to deploying green hydrogen in offshore environments.
  • Africa Green Growth on 10th November: the event was a valuable opportunity to discuss electrolysis, a promising option for carbon-free hydrogen production from renewable resources, and the different types of electrolyzers currently available on the market and those that are under development.
  • Lesson dedicated to green H2 in the framework of the advanced training course organized by RES4Africa Foundation in collaboration with MAECI, BEI, Enel Foundation, SDA Bocconi, and MIP from 21 November to 2 December.

Moreover, we are carrying out the following projects:

  • We are working to support RES4AFRICA to understand the current scenario of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Tunisia. RES4Africa was in fact interested in producing a report analyzing the potential development of these technologies from multiple perspectives: regulatory framework, market design, procurement and use cases..). The goal of the report is to contribute to the national efforts towards a clean and sustainable energy transition and towards an optimal use of energy sources in the electricity system and to provide guidance for a roadmap to deploy BESS in the country.
  • RES4AFRICA is leading a project funded by IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), where we act as the technical counterpart. The project deals with the development of renewable energy in Ethiopia, aimed at providing a decarbonized solution for the local demand, with a specific focus on the consumption of electricity for agriculture (e.g., irrigation).

Next steps

In 2023 we are going to contribute to the new RES4Africa Knowledge Platform, which is made up of 7 training sections (technologies access to market, financing, operation, permitting, policies and regulation, sustainability). Thanks to this platform, it will be possible to deliver specific training courses.

Moreover, in partnership with RES4AFRICA, we are working to develop a concept of R&D project in the next call of Horizon Europe HORIZON-CL5-2023-D3-02-16: accelerating the green transition and energy access in Africa (deadline September 2023). RINA supported RES4AFRICA to open and manage a technical table for discussion, as well as screen the most interesting R&D opportunities.
