RINA joined COP27 and the global fight against climate change

The transition to sustainable industries and implications on marine transport and infrastructure
In November 2022, Egypt is hosting the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.
Our Andrea Bombardi, RINA Carbon Reduction Excellence Executive Vice President, and Antonios Trakakis, RINA Greece Marine Technical Director, joined COP27 to hold a series of speeches about the transition to sustainable industries and the related implications on marine transport and infrastructures:
- Decarbonizing the entire energy value chain: complementary solutions for an interconnected world: The energy transition, as a roadmap towards net zero, is pervasive to all the sectors, and must leverage on all the technologies and solutions to reach the goals in contrasting climate changes. This is why our experience covers the entire energy value chain, form ports to ships, from Renewables to Hard to Abate industries passing through transport/storage and distribution of energy vectors.
- Opportunities and threats coming from the energy transition: creating a farsighted and resilient strategy from a business perspective: industrial players involved in the process of GHG reduction to answer to questions like: how can we react to the energy transition and make a step forward to the sustainable roadmap? How my process will be impacted by the changes and how resilient is my business model in the Net Zero scenario? How my products are resilient and aligned with my strategy? According to us, paving the roadmap to NetZero means working on three dimensions: Strategy, Processes and Products.
- A scalable and progressive solution for meeting IMO2050: the use of use of unconventional fuels together with the development of advanced fuel saving technologies are key levers towards Net Zero: the first implicates concerns about fuel availability, health, safety and social acceptability, the latter needs thorough practices reconsideration. Hydrogen can be a potential marine fuel, but what are the safety aspects, production on demand, scalability of the solution, relation between H2 and CCUS, the path towards compliance and implications on a broader H2 & CO2 ready supply chain?
- The Mediterranean area could speed up the deployment of technologies for clean energy: is Italy and Europe self-sufficient in reaching the Net Zero scenario? In our opinion, Italy could play a pivotal role in establishing dedicated corridor for H2, CO2 and ammonia, connecting north and central Europe countries with North Africa.
