ECC19 Conference

25 - 29 Jun 2019

We are among the event's sponsors, discussing about the integration of control strategies for process quality improvements in steel plants

The European Control Conference (ECC) has been organized every two years under the auspices of the European Control Association (EUCA), aiming to bring together academic and industrial professionals in the field of systems and control, and to promote scientific cooperation and exchanges within the European Union and between Europe and other parts of the World.

We will sponsor and attend the conference to show RINA expertise in the Industry 4.0 area, with a special focus on control process systems for heavy industry.

The 2019 local organizer are the University of Naples Federico II and the University of Sannio in Benevento, supported by the technical co-sponsorship of the event is provided by the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) and the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC).

Integration of control strategies for process quality improvements in steel plants

This paper will be introduced on June 27th by our very own Luca Piedimonte, Smart Factory Technologies Deputy Manager.

The optimization of complex industrial processes such as that of steel production, passes through the acquisition and tracking of data, the ability to extract information from them and the definition of rules for the improvement of management practices and real-time control. The improvement of the global performance is achieved pursuing several objectives of efficiency and quality, often in conflict with each other, whose indicators, appropriately defined and implemented, must therefore be monitored and correlated with the controlling variables.

The objective of this paper was to describe how these concepts were implemented in a dedicated software platform, installed at the production sites. The platform was based on the integration of adaptive process models, field signals post-processing, definition and continuous monitoring of multi-criteria KPIs for each technological aspect of quality and efficiency.

Analysis of collected information (process data and calculated performance indicators) allows the definition of control rules to be applied real time and the improvement of process management strategies. One of KPIs (Arc Covering Index) was successfully used to reduce energy losses during melting process in furnace.
