Challenge

The sporting events sector is among the activities with the greatest environmental, social and economic impact. In particular, major motorsport events such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix generate significant CO₂ emissions, high energy consumption, and complex waste management. In line with the European Union’s climate neutrality objectives, it is essential to transform these events into models of sustainability

The goals set to align the Autodromo Nazionale Monza with international sustainability standards were:

- Assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts of events hosted at Monza.

- Define measurable objectives and sustainability KPIs.

- Actively engage stakeholders, fans, suppliers, and local communities.

- Reduce emissions, waste, and resource consumption through concrete actions.

- Promote accessibility and inclusivity.

- Ensure continuous improvement through internal audits and regular reviews.

Applied expertise

As RINA, an independent and accredited third party, we are proud to have supported the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in obtaining the international ISO 20121:2024 certification, dedicated to the sustainable management of events.

We validated the adoption of a management system that integrates sustainability into every stage of sporting and motorsport event organization: from planning to logistics, through to the impact on the local area.

Thanks to our expertise in sustainability, event management, auditing systems, and in-depth knowledge of the sports sector, Monza has become a replicable model for other circuits and major events.

Impact

The 2025 edition of the Formula 1 Pirelli Italian Grand Prix marked a turning point for sustainability in motorsport:

- 62.97% separate waste collection (+11.85% compared to 2024).

- 480,000 plastic bottles saved thanks to 26 water fountains and 120 distribution points.

- 70,000 doses of SPF 50+ sunscreen distributed with LILT (Italian League for the Fight Against Cancer).

- 1.8 tones of food recovered and donated to 290 families.

Certifying the iconic Monza circuit was not just a technical achievement: it was a concrete step towards a new way of conceiving sporting events
With RINA’s support, the Autodromo was able to integrate sustainability as a structural value, transforming an iconic event into an international benchmark.

The ISO 20121 certification sends a strong message to the entire sector: it is possible to combine spectacle, tradition, and innovation with environmental and social responsibility.

Sustainability, measurability, independence: these are the pillars on which our approach is founded. And today, thanks to this project, Monza is not only a legendary circuit, but also a laboratory for the future for those who wish to innovate with awareness.  di futuro per chi vuole innovare con consapevolezza.
