Challenge

CMA CGM is a global company in maritime transport that serves 420 of the world’s 521 commercial ports and operates more than 250 shipping lines.

To modernize recently acquired La Méridionale’s services between Marseille and Corsica, CMA CGM is introducing two advanced RoPax ferries designed to meet ambitious sustainability goals.

These vessels will have to:

- Carry 1,000 passengers and 2,500 lane meters of freight.

- Operate with zero emissions during port stays.

- Integrate dual-fuel engines and a 13 MWh battery energy storage system.

Achieving full emission-free operations in these ports requires innovative energy solutions and expertise in energy performance optimization.

Applied expertise

We were commissioned to deliver the concept design, general arrangement, and outline specifications.

We supported our client with shipyard negotiations and provided naval architecture services at the early basic design phase, including consultancy on stability, energy efficiency, and compliance with Safe Return to Port regulations.
The expertise gained from over 60 shipboard battery projects completed led us to the satisfaction of our client in offering guidance on the battery specifications to meet La Méridionale’s zero-emission in-port target. Also, the two new vessels will be integrated with high-tech dual-fuel engines with substantial battery capacity, significantly lowering their immediate environmental impact.

Impact

With this project, CMA CGM uses the most promising energy efficiency technologies to continue advancing toward its goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Our expertise in energy performance optimization will help the two future ships of La Méridionale to reduce energy consumption by 50% less than the Piana, the reference ship of the fleet, while providing  a significantly improved comfortable passenger experience.

This is one of the recent projects that has involved us as RoPax designers, such as the collaboration with Finnlines and TT-Line, emphasizing us as the leader in delivering environmental responsibility with commercial performance in the ferry sector.
