Challenge

Five large-scale transformers destined for Luis Carlos and Draco solar power plants, owned by Atlas Renewable Energy, were high-value and strategic assets (weighing approximately 250 t each) and played a critical role in the success of the project.

Given the logistical complexity and risks associated with transportation of such oversized equipment, STARR International Brasil appointed RINA as an independent warranty surveyor (third party) to ensure all operations were carried out safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with technical and regulatory standards.

Applied expertise

Having global expertise and extensive experience in Warranty Survey, Project Cargo and Transport Engineering, RINA provided comprehensive support from the engineering review phase through to on-site operations and final delivery.

Our scope included:

Technical review and approval of engineering documentation, including loading, securing, transport and discharge procedures
Stability analysis of the transport configuration to ensure structural integrity throughout the journey
Validation of route’s geometric and structural feasibility studies, assessing bridges, viaducts, and other civil structures along the route
On-site inspections and functional testing of cranes, lifting equipment, transport systems, and securing materials
Close monitoring of loading and discharge operations

Throughout the process, our inspectors conducted continuous on-site monitoring, overseeing loading, preparation, and transportation activities, ensuring each step met international safety standards and the client’s insurance requirements.

Impact

Our technical oversight ensured full operational compliance and safety at every stage, enabling the loading, transport and delivery of the transformers to be completed successfully and without incidents.

To date, four units have been safely delivered, with additional shipments scheduled as part of the project’s next phases.

Our collaborative and independent approach minimized risk, resolved logistical challenges, and reinforced client and insurer confidence, resulting in ongoing cooperation and new project opportunities.

The success of this collaboration has led STARR International to extend its relationship with RINA, commissioning new projects and expressing interest in establishing a regular inspection and verification program supported by our technical team.
