CFD tools allow to analyze and assess more solutions at a lower price and in shorter time compared to model testing.
It also allows an in depth knowledge of the flow field in space and time, making CFD a very powerful tool for design assessment and troubleshooting.
Particularly for very novel designs, it can overcome problems related to the extrapolation of results from model-scale to full-scale.
Deliverables
CFD analyses can provide a support for:
- assessing design solutions (also in a preliminary phase)
- troubleshooting
- analyzing gaps for fulfilling requirements
- designing improvement and optimization
Examples of application:
- evaluation of yacht performance and benchmarking of design solutions (still water resistance with dynamic sinkage and trim, self-propulsion tests, propeller performance assessment)
- assessment of hull, propeller and rudder interaction
- estimation of hull pressure pulses, for reducing induced hull vibrations
- seakeeping analysis for the prediction of the yacht behavior in waves (motions and accelerations, added resistance)
- assessment of exhaust gases propagation
