The 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive concerns the design, construction and marketing of machines and quasi-machines, interchangeable equipment, safety components, lifting accessories, removable mechanical transmission devices, chains, ropes and belts.

The Directive, in detail:

  • distinguishes the categories of machinery that have a high potential hazard for the operator/user (Annex IV) from the other categories
  • defines the essential safety requirements for machines (Annex I)
  • depending on the type of machines, codifies the processes for the manufacturers in order to obtain a Declaration of Conformity and the CE marking
  • constitutes a mandatory requirement for the free marketing of these products in the EU Member States.
