Solid Secondary Fuel (SSF) is a fuel obtained from the dry component (plastic, paper, textile fibres, etc.) of non-hazardous waste, whether urban or special, by means of special separation treatments from other non-combustible materials such as glass, metals and inert materials.
SSF deserve due attention, considering that reducing the dependence on oil and other fossil fuels cannot be based on the diffusion of renewable energy sources only, but must also be driven by the use of alternative fuels, such as those produced from non-hazardous waste, including the SSFs.
Their valorisation, particularly at organisations such as cement plants or thermoelectric power plants, makes it possible to transform the EU-level obligations and constraints into a competitive resource.
Italian Ministerial Decree No. 22 of 14/02/2013 states that SSF producers should adopt a quality management system.
A successful certification of a management system according to UNI EN 15358 attests to the quality of the production processes, the monitoring and the documented control of a whole production process, from the point of arrival of the waste to delivery to the customer.
