Certification ISO 45003 – Psychological health and safety in the workplace

How to certify psychosocial risk management within the ISO 45001 management system

The standard ISO 45003 provides guidance on the management of psychosocial risks and the promotion of well-being at work, as an integral part of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System based on the ISO 45001 (OSH) standard.

Employee well-being is one of the top priorities for employers, especially after the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic: stress, depression and isolation are just some of the challenges faced by workers during this period. Promoting mental health to address psychosocial risks is crucial to ensure overall well-being, safety and health at work.

Advantages of ISO 45003 certification

Higg FEM and FSLM assessments

- Improve hiring and employee retention.

- Enhance the company's reputation.

ISO 45003 certification is applicable to ISO 45001 certified organizations of all sizes in any commodity sector.

Certification process

- Complete the information questionnaire.

- Submit the offer to RINA. If accepted, sign the contract.

- RINA conducts audit activities (on-site and/or off-site) and issue a final report.

- If the previous phases are successful, a Technical Committee evaluates the certification.

- If the outcome is positive, a certificate of conformity is issued.

- Subsequent audits are conducted to maintain the certificate and the final report.

ISO 45003 certification lasts for 3 years. To keep the certification, you must pass yearly audits. After 3 years, you can renew the certification. The duration of ISO 45003 certification is always linked to the validity of ISO 45001 certification.

Q&A

Our experts answer some of the most asked questions: learn more.

How is ISO 45003 related to ISO 45001?

To get ISO 45003 certification, your organization must already have a valid ISO 45001 certificate. The scope of the ISO 45003 certification must match the scope of your current ISO 45001 certification.

What can psychosocial risks relate to?

Psychosocial risks can affect workers' health and psychological safety. They can derive from the way work is organized, social factors at work, dangerous equipment or activities, and the work environment, which may not always be pleasant.

Does the ISO 45003 audit need to be conducted together with the ISO 45001 audit?

Not necessarily. Your company only needs to have a valid ISO 45001 certificate. If your organization is certified by RINA for ISO 45001, you can have combined audits, which can save time.

Regulatory Focus

The ISO 45003 standard provides guidelines for managing psychosocial risks and promoting well-being at work. It is an essential part of an occupational health and safety management system and is meant to be integrated with ISO 45001, which includes guidelines concerning the planning, implementation, review, evaluation and improvement of an occupational health and safety management system.

ISO 45003 has a common structure with other management systems, called the High Level Structure (HLS), and can be integrated with other company management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. It can also be used with the Organization and Control Management Model (e.g. Legislative Decree 231/2001).
