June 8th is World Ocean Day, a great time to celebrate the important role the ocean has for our life and the planet.
Do you know that in 2016 the European Union launched an International Ocean Governance Agenda and commit to a safe, secure, clean, healthy and sustainably managed ocean?
Since then, the EU has taken an active role in international ocean governance and in implementing the UN 2030 Agenda and its SDG 14. In particular, the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Water” is designed to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments.
Major pressures on the ocean are due to discharge, loss, and leakage of contaminants.
Pesticides, biocides, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, radioactive substances, and pharmaceuticals primarily originate from land-based sources. Contamination is highest in coastal waters, especially in areas with low circulation and lagoons, which are constantly growing in contaminants content if no action is carried out to revert this suffering conditions.
On 1st June 2023, we inaugurated the launch of a new R&D project: the RHE-MEDiation lighthouse, funded under the Horizon Europe programme (GA n. 101113045), aims at destressing the Mediterranean Sea from chemical pollution, including peak concentrations in known hot spots.
We contribute to the EU Mission Charter with an initiative which makes the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular as well.
