Innovation Strategy & Roadmapping

A Total Innovation Management framework to support innovation processes

Our Approach

With our Total Innovation Management framework of services, RINA supports organisations in reaching their innovation targets through the design and implementation of Innovation Management  systems and processes.

Our Total Innovation Management is designed according to the ISO 56000 guidelines.

Together with our Clients, we assess the current stage of development of their innovation process and, starting from here, we tailor an ad-hoc roadmap to complete the path to reach the market uptake of a new product or technology.

Client: European Commission

Activities:

Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) can be tailored to achieve different targets, including the global increased energy and resource efficiency, in almost every field of activity and production – such as manufacturing sector - and in the use of products, according to a cradle to grave (or cradle to cradle).

The purpose of the study was the definition of the European roadmap for research on KETs - such as: nanotechnology, micro- and nanoelectronics, semiconductors, advanced materials, biotechnology and photonics.

After a deep analysis of the literature of KETs in EU, we organized a desk study, composed by interviews and four European workshops with industrial stakeholders and (regional) policy makers.

In order to validate the desk study, we identified relevant industrial stakeholders and SMEs active in the manufacturing sector capable to provide a fresh opinion to the project and conducted a survey through telephone or face to face interviews.

Results:

We collected all the information and data gathered through the workshops and the surveys, providing a statistical analysis on the state of the art of KETs and a series of recommendations in order to create a consistent and complete roadmap to set the activities within H2020.

Client:  European Commission

Activities:

The purpose of the study was to support the European Commission, through the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) in the identification of those technologies, among the KETs, able to support the maximum efficiency in the research and innovation efforts, stimulating the acceleration of civil – military dual use.

Results:

The project established the methodology, and extends the scope of the RO-cKETs project (Methodology, Work Plan And Roadmap For Cross-Cutting Kets Activities In Horizon 2020), broadening the landscape thanks to technologies stemming from both single and cross-cutting KETs, addressing newer sectors of defence & space-related technologies and facilitating access to the results from the side of SMEs.

Activities:

  1. product development
  2. technology troubleshooting
  3. strategic technology roadmapping

Results

The project focused on the identification of innovative technologies in the Electronic Warfare field. A detailed analysis was carried out for all the innovative technologies identified, in terms of technological, market and industrial impact. Thanks to such holistic approach, a shortlist of most promising technologies was prioritized and a detailed roadmap on their future development was implemented.

Client: EPRG

Activities:

The project focused on the identification of linepipe tagging and tracking technologies for on and offshore pipeline fabrication. A detailed analysis was carried out starting from the definition of requirements and KPIs. It was allowed by the identification of experts panels, involving the whole chain from pipe producer to end user, and the conduction of a web survey for requirements definition and weighting. Technologies scouting activity was carried out to identify existing technologies with the defined requirements, they were then reviewed and assessed in order to determine the most suitable ones.

Results:

Linepipe tagging and technologies tracking for on and offshore pipeline fabrication were the main results of the project

Activities:

The project started with the identification of key players at worldwide level (20 companies) in three H2 technology sectors: fuel-cells, electrolysers and storage units.

For each of the three sectors the following tasks were performed:

  1. Monitoring of technology activity of the key players,
  2. Analysis of economic and financial performances of the key players,
  3. Mapping of relevant KPIs (performances, characteristics, costs, sourcing, maturity, …),
  4. Mapping of relevant IP.

This data coupled with a detailed review of international literature (i.e. patents, scientific publications, market reports), allowed the definition of Hydrogen technology benchmarks.

Results

The activities were aimed at the definition of technology benchmarks related to hydrogen.

Activities:

The overall objective of this technology intelligence project  has been to map, identify and assess technical innovative solutions or emerging technologies in the scenario of rock excavation, taking into account, among others, performance, sustainability and applicability to urban environments, while allowing for scalability in full scale equipment.

For a comprehensive approach, the research has also been extended to all those technologies developed in other sectors, but that could be transferred to rock excavation.

Results

As a result, we provided a scenario analysis of State of Art (SoA) for latest, competitive, alternatives technologies and concepts for rock excavation, by assessing patents, experiences in other industrial sectors (e.g. space exploration), scientific literature and laboratory scale test reports.

We applied inventive problem solving for identifying guidelines and concepts to solve technical problems and developing solutions considered most promising.

Activities

Setup of an interactive web platform for strategic intelligence services that allow a continuous monitoring of main technological and market trends, technological novelties, competitive scenario, and technology transfer and R&D opportunities along the Copper value chain.

All information is available on Wiki-style pages; built-in search engine based on categories, tags and free keywords enables retrieving information from the platform’s knowledge base, e.g. typing the name of a company will retrieve all information (patents, papers, news, reports) related to that company. Moreover, a «comment» function is enabled for all pages, allowing users to leave comments and tag each other.

Results:

The main result of the project has been the development of a Strategic Intelligence Platform.

Activities

The overall objective of this conceptual design and feasibility project is to develop an innovative system for optical fiber sorting.

The activities started with the analysis of current scenario (patents and competitor) for the launch of an innovative product. A functional analysis of the system were performed together with the scouting of off-the-shelf components available on the market and the providers identification. Three conceptual designs of an innovative automated system to substitute specific manual operations were developed and evaluated and a prototype was engineered, produced and tested.

Results:

The main result was the conceptual design and feasibility of an innovative system for optical fiber sorting.

Client: Confindustria Ancona

Activities

The overall objective of the project was the development of a Strategic Roadmapping study for the mechanics sector (machinery tool and plant manufacturers, mechanical workshops, molds production ...).

The study allowed to highlight:

  1. the technological development trends of the sector;
  2. the main drivers of evolution of the product and their impact in the definition of product concept;
  3. the opportunities with greater added value in possible reference markets.

Results:

The final report contains an overview of technological opportunities and the formulation of product guidelines that can be used by entrepreneurs and CEO to define their objectives and calibrate their strategy.

Client: Confindustria Bergamo

Activities

The overall objective of the project was the development of strategic studies for relevant sectors such as wood, textile, textile machines & mechanics sector.

Results:

The studies allowed to analyze the current environment, in terms of market, technologies and innovation, identify technological and market opportunities with greater added value as well as technology transfer opportunities from other sectors. The gathered information were then used to develop an evolution roadmap of the companies involved in the project.
