Decommissioning represents a very complex multidisciplinary project, which requires solid and very specific competences.

Its ambitious goal is to find the equilibrium point among the need to protect the environment and anthropic activities on one hand and to take into account safety, technical and economic feasibility on the other hand.

Focus on decommissioning

The term “decommissioning” typically referred to the nuclear industry. From the end of the ’90s, decommissioning has become more and more of a common interest also in the offshore industry.

Decommissioning of an offshore facility mainly serves to render the area where an asset has been developed for years, free from hazards for the local population and for their activities and to restore the environment to its original conditions, in agreement with applicable regulations and company expectations.

Generally, the decommissioning of offshore facilities is regulated by host state licensing requirements or local regulations. In addition to these, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the prime global authority, which is internationally responsible for defining a set of technical requirements for decommissioning activities.
