Most remarkable projects

Client: FLAINOX

Activities:

  1. assess the energetic and environmental impacts of five dyeing machines manufactured by FLAINOX along their life cycle, comparing standard and innovative predefined processes.
  2. demonstrate the relevant environmental benefits provided by the optimization interventions performed by FLAINOX on its machineries.

Results:

In the framework of the project an Executive Summary for each machine analyzed is create; it reports the comparative LCA study and is utilized by FLAINOX as promotional document to be applied on the machinery itself.

Client:  FLAINOX

Activities:

Application of LCA Methodology to Flainox plant for the assessment of Organization Footprint across several years, taking into account business travels, material and energy consumptions, commuting, other sources.

Results:

Application of LCA Methodology to a plant is dedicated to the production of textile machinery mainly used for textile finishing processes.

Client: ACIMIT

Activities:

The “Sustainable Technologies” project aims at supporting and promoting the Italian textile machinery manufacturers in their commitment to research advanced solutions to meet sustainability criteria.

The Green Label tool is the instrument used to quantify the impacts associated to a certain machinery, in order to monitor and communicate its environmental performance.

The value of the Carbon Footprint, calculated by the tool and reported on the Green Label, represent a trustworthy and reliable result which valorizes the commitment to sustainability of the companies adhering to this project.

Results

The technology solutions developed can reduce consumption in energy, water and chemical products during its use phase, for a manufacturing cycle with a reduced environmental impact.

Client: ASSOMAC

Activities:

The “Sustainable Technologies” project aims at supporting and promoting the Italian manufacturers of machinery for footwear, leather-goods and tanning technology industry.

The Green Label is a voluntary scheme which permits to a machinery manufacturer adhering this project to evaluate and show the environmental impacts (CO2 eq. emissions) generated by the use phase of its machinery. This encourage the manufacturers in their commitment to research advanced solutions to meet sustainability criteria.

The Green Label tool is an instrument used to quantify in an automatic way, the impacts associated to a certain machinery, in order to monitor and communicate its environmental performance.

Results:

The CFP (Carbon Footprint) value, calculated by the tool through the LCA methodology, and reported on the Green Label, represent a trustworthy and reliable result which valorizes the commitment to sustainability of the companies adhering to this project.

Activities:

  1. Life Cycle Assessment of the services provided by the company (Collection, Transport and Disposal of Sanitary Waste)
  2. Evaluation of the fulfillment of the identified environmental requirements and recommendations to fill the detected gaps
  3. Preparation of technical documentation for the application of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Results

The aim of this project has been to quantify the environmental impacts related to the services of Collection, Transport and Disposal of Sanitary Waste,  provided by an Italian company.

One of the objectives of the assessment has been to analyze the environmental criteria for this kind of services (Green Public Procurement) and to use them as benchmark to evaluate the compliance of the company.

The assessment has been performed in accordance with the calculation rules defined in the Product Category Rules “Solid Waste Disposal Services”, in order to make the results comparable.

Activities:

METRICS developed innovative methodologies and technologies to promote sustainability and security in the city’s historic centers.

The research activities are structured in three macro thematic areas: safety, environmental sustainability and life quality.

Results

The developed solutions, managing the complexity of urban systems in historic centers, allow to increase the structural security of buildings and infrastructures and improve the quality of life of the population, operating in accordance with the principles of environmental and social sustainability.

Activities

After a preliminary screening, three Guatemalan industry sectors (dairy, tourism, textile) have been selected and analysed in order to provide clean technology propositions (recommendations) to help develop viable investments in the field of climate efficient technologies, supporting the knowledge transfer on best available climate technologies and to increase the engagement of local suppliers of climate technologies.

Results:

The project final aim has been to support to the National Committee for Clean Production to prioritize investments in clean technologies and to help Guatemalan policy makers to prioritize clean production and competitiveness policy.

Activities

In the framework of the Clean Space Initiative, promoted by ESA for increasing attention to the environmental impacts of its space activities, the “LCA4Space project” aimed at evaluating, through the LCA methodology, the environmental performances of two space missions (Astra 1N and MetOp-A) together with the elaboration of sector specific methodological LCA guidelines.

Results:

A cradle to grave approach was applied to the two missions and a common methodology for European space sector was elaborated.

Launcher components that fall to earth during the launching phase mainly end up in oceans in order to avoid impacts in populated areas. The project aimed to quantify the impact of these launcher components could have on deep sea ecosystems, providing a basis and recommendations for future work.

Activities

  1. Life Cycle Assessment approach for evaluating Marine Ecotoxicity of Space materials
  2. Support to Assessment of environmental impacts on deep sea ecosystems
  3. Recommendations for in-depth assessement of environmental impacts in specific marine environments

Results:

The project applied Functional Ecology, a branch of ecology that studies the roles and functions played by biological organisms in ecosystems, in order to understand the specific impact of launcher materials (and dismissed satellites) on ocean ecosystems. The project is part of the ESA Clean Space Initiative, which promotes an eco-friendly approach to space activities.
