Challenge

Data centers are highly energy-intensive infrastructures, with demand continuing to grow steadily. At the same time, the use of renewable energy sources is increasing, not only to power these systems but across the entire energy ecosystem. 

On one hand, data centers generate large amounts of waste heat that often remains unused; on the other, renewable energy sources require more flexible systems capable of adapting to fluctuations between energy production and demand. 

The DAFNE project addresses this dual challenge by developing solutions that recover and valorise waste heat while improving overall energy management. 

In particular, the project will develop an innovative thermal storage system, integrated with heat pumps and renewable energy sources, enabling energy to be used when it is most needed.

This approach helps reduce waste, improve efficiency, and make data centers more flexible, enabling services such as peak shaving and more intelligent demand management. 

Applied expertise 

As a technical partner, we contribute to the project by developing advanced solutions to improve energy management in data centers. 

We design predictive models and tools that help anticipate energy demand and optimise energy use, making systems more efficient and flexible. 

At the same time, we validate the performance of the developed solutions in real-world conditions, ensuring their effectiveness and measuring their tangible benefits in energy, economic and environmental terms. 

Impact 

DAFNE will deliver a validated and replicable solution for the smart management of waste heat and energy flexibility in data centers. 

The solution will be demonstrated in Italy in a pilot data center, where it will be tested under real operating conditions to assess its technical, economic and environmental performance.
