Challenge

Over the past twenty years, governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, regulatory agencies, and the public have continued to express growing concerns over the presence and use of certain chemicals in products, households, workplaces, and the environment in general.

In response to these concerns, the global regulatory landscape continues to grow more complex, with regulations requiring the monitoring, communication or ban of certain substances. This poses a challenge to manufacturers of equipment, as both their supply chain and customer base is global, but regulations around the world tackle this issue differently.

As such manufacturers need to know an ever-widening list of chemicals used to make or supplied with their products, meaning robust data collection and information management strategies are essential.

Applied expertise

RINA supports the members of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers in understanding how to effectively manage such obligations. The association represents over 1,000 companies in over 200+ product lines in the agriculture, construction, forestry, mining, and utility industries. AEM members include companies such as ABB, AGCO, Caterpillar, CLAAS, CNH Industrial, Deere, Liebherr, Komatsu, John Deere, JBC and Volvo.

We provide the management and update of the Heavy Equipment Declarable Substances List (HEDSL) which harmonizes and simplifies the industry’s data collection efforts. Adopting a single list of known chemicals of concern, with agreed upon threshold limits, and clearly communicated reasoning, helps educate the supply chains on the regulatory needs of their customers, as well as simplify the reporting requests to which they need to respond.

Impact

RINA monitors global legislative updates, highlighting any of relevance to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers members products, and makes recommendations based on the likelihood of the substance being present in heavy equipment industry products, placed on the market. This allows for a focused, high-impact data collection list to be compiled, ensuring manufacturers are aligned to international compliance requirements.
