The project includes the modernization of the “A4 Turin – Milan” highway between the cities of Novara Ovest and Novara Est. D’Appolonia has been nominated by the General Contractor as Designer for the preparation of the technical documentation for the construction and technical assistance during the works of the 7 km long infrastructure near Novara Est, whose value is around 89Meuros.
D’Appolonia has been involved in the definition of the construction strategy in order to reduce the required time to build the different works and therefore the partial downtime of the highway service. Different strategies have been investigated with the General Contractor including all construction phases that are required to manage the traffic on the highway with particular reference to the period of EXPO 2015. Thus D’Appolonia’s activity has included the definition of the traffic management during the field operations in accordance with the Italian road regulations and codes.
The project final layout regards a modern highway with three service carriageways and one emergency carriageway. The project includes 6 highway viaducts, 1 bridge, 1 overpass and 8 underpasses. Once the main layout of the different works have been defined, D’Appolonia has provided preliminary concept for new works, detailed design with shop-drawings of all geotechnical works, bridges/viaducts foundations included, civil structures (bridges/viaducts, both steel-concrete composite or pre-stressed precast concrete, overpasses, underpasses) have been developed including main road track and secondary roads layouts, hydraulic system works and technological systems. This phase has included the definition of provisional works, required during erection, and all the civil works for the final highway configuration.
Since the beginning of the construction operations, D’Appolonia has provided a detailed assistance to the General Contractor and Construction Supervision Team in order to 1) solve non conformities regarding the works and the correspondent design, 2) solve the emerging interferences with existing structures/systems, 3) identify suppliers for the realization of the civil structures such as bridge decking, precast concrete/cast on site underpasses and hydraulic system works. D’Appolonia has also overviewed bridges erection and lunching, including the assistance for load tests prior the opening of the highway.
