Closing the gap in remote ship inspection: an overview of ROBINS Project

A webinar to explore the use of drones in ship surveys and remote inspection technology

robins-project-webinarNever more so than during the Covid-19 emergency, technology has shown its potential to avoid or minimise business disruption to the maritime sector. The industry has increased the already growing demand for remote services such as surveys and verifications of all kind.

The ROBINS Project, started in 2018 and co-funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 EU Research and Innovation programme, aimed to fill technology and regulatory gaps representing a barrier to the adoption of new technologies in activities related to the inspection of ships and support a wide scale application of Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in the marine industry.

The biggest technology gap identified at the beginning of the project was related to the capability of drones to provide the same level of reliability as the traditional procedures. On the other side, the regulatory gap consisted in the possibility to verify such equivalence.
