Challenge

SMARTFISHING projectThe fishing industry faces several pressing challenges, including inefficient maintenance and work operations, high fuel consumption, reduced productivity, crew safety concerns, and environmental impact. Traditional methods have often failed to address these issues comprehensively. SMARTFISHING endeavors to overcome these challenges by providing a holistic solution that optimizes vessel performance, streamlines maintenance procedures, reduces fuel consumption, and ensures compliance with industry standards and regulations. The primary objective is to enhance fishing activities' efficiency, economic viability, and sustainability.

Our role in the project

RINA provides the monitoring of critical parameters relating to the status of fishing vessels, through the use of various sensors, whose data are conveyed to and stored in an on-board control room. Sensor data are transmitted via 4G terrestrial communication, when fishing vessels are in visibility of the coasts and in communication coverage. A satellite communication system is set up to send alarm signals at any time during fishing sessions. We also manage the design of a SW capable of conveying data via terrestrial or satellite communication, depending on the type of message.

Conclusion

The SMARTFISHING project holds immense promise for the fishing industry, shipowners, fishermen, port authorities, and the entire maritime community. By harnessing the power of space-enabled technologies, SMARTFISHING offers numerous benefits that will revolutionize fishing operations.

First and foremost, the integration of IoT sensors, AI algorithms, and satellite assets enables real-time monitoring and diagnostics of fishing vessels. This proactive approach allows for timely detection of failures, enhanced maintenance practices, and optimal resource allocation, ultimately leading to improved vessel performance, reduced downtime, and cost savings.
Furthermore, SMARTFISHING's advanced analytics capabilities and integration of satellite Earth observations empower ship captains and fleet managers with valuable insights into weather and sea conditions. This enables better route optimization, fuel consumption management, and compliance with environmental standards. The solution also supports port authorities in enhancing maritime vessel traffic management, controlling fishing activities, and ensuring emergency response capabilities.

Overall, SMARTFISHING offers a comprehensive decision support system that promotes efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the fishing industry.
