Upscaling Hydrogen Technologies and Fuel Cell Transportable Gensets in EU cities

Business Period Project Coordinator Funding Scheme
Energy February 2018 - October 2023 RINA Consulting S.p.A H2020

Challenge

Temporary gensets are used everywhere in our cities (fairs, markets, construction sites, temporary events and concerts…) and their market is currently moslty served by diesel internal combustion engines, which account for around 5-10% of fine-particle pollution in urban environment.

Fuel cell (FC) can easily replace these technologies promoting 0 noise, 0 emission temporary power  generation.

EVERYWH2ERE already developed and realized 2 pre-industrial prototypes of hydrogen fueled gensets (25 kW and 100 kW) which can be safely and easily operated by end-users as their aspect and operation performances are completely similar to diesel gensets.

Those two gensets are now ready to be used properly connected to a pressurized hydrogen storage (realized in France by MAHYTEC): the containerized structure was realized in Finland (THT), integrating a fuel cell subsystem from Sweden (PCS). Then the gensetes were shipped to Italy, where they were integrated and finalized, installing adequate power architecture (FRIEM), control devices and strategy (GENPORT) and hydrogen management systems (LINDE). The prototypes were validated and the demonstration phase is currently on-going.

Approach

RINA is the Project Coordinator of EVERYWH2ERE.

Moreover, we are also in charge of:

  • Supporting the definition of FC gensets specifications, according to end-user requirements and analysing Health and Safety Issues
  • Developing Business Models and assessing the  Regulatory Framework towards drafting Route for Replication
  • Assess logistic and life-cycle costing aspects to promote replication and future market deployment

Conclusion

By October 2023, EVERYWH2ERE will realize a total of 7 pre-industrial prototype gensets providing a zero emissions and zero noise solution. Project team will test them in construction sites, music festivals and urban public events all around EU.

These events will be important showcases to promote FC potential to a large audience in order to increase social acceptance and public awareness. An active involvement of public authorities and industrial stakeholders will foster the spreading of FC gensets opening a potential market doorway towards viable EU cities and Hydrogen economy.

EVERYWH2ERE project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (now Clean Hydrogen Partnership) under grant agreement No 779606. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe research.
