Challenge

Waste of electrical and electronic equipment is one the fastest growing waste streams in the EU, growing at 3-5% per year, with a generation of above 12 million tonnes estimated for 2020. It is a complex mixture of valuable materials that can cause major environmental and health problems if not properly managed due to their hazardous content. The improvement of waste of electrical and electronic equipment prevention, collection and recovery is therefore essential to boost circular economy and enhance resource efficiency.

C-SERVEES has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement Nº 776714 in order to boost a resource-efficient circular economy in the electrical and electronic sector through the development, testing, validation and transfer of new circular economic business models based on systemic eco-innovative services that include:

  • eco-leasing of the electrical and electronic equipment,
  • product customization,
  • improved Waste of electrical and electronic equipment management
  • ICT services to support the other eco-services.

Approach

In the framework of C-SERVEES, RINA is in charge of providing key enabling tools for boosting the replicability and transferability of the new business models and services across Europe in order to:

  • Develop a series of guidelines for the eco-design of electrical and electronic equipment following ecodesign principles and strategies encompassing all product’s life-cycle stages
  • Evaluate the gaps in regulation and the standards to identify and propose potential measures to improve policy and standardization related to the developed products and services
  • Involve stakeholders in order to ensure the replication of the developed circular economy models Moreover, RINA is going to develop a logistic software tool able to ensure a sustainable transportation of the waste from electric/electronic from the collection points to the treatment/recycling sites and then from there to the manufacturers in order to enable the re-use of the recovered materials.

Conclusion

In conclusion, C-SERVEES will:

  • provide new product-service models that enable consumers to access to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) leasing services
  • will allow multiple-use cycles of EEE through a circular flow of products, components and materials
  • will contribute to a circular economy-driven industry, leading to green jobs and wealth creation
  • will contribute to enhanced knowledge and practical implementation of eco-innovative circular business models and services in the E&E sector
  • reduce the environmental impacts of EEE
