Fire testing for ships

Fire resistance, reaction-to-fire tests and simulation of the behaviour of fire-resisting divisions

Our laboratory carries out all the fire resistance and reaction-to-fire tests required by national and international regulations.

In particular, we test materials used in the marine sector and specified in the International Maritime Organization's International Code for Application of Fire Test Procedures and in Community Directive 96/98/EC and subsequent amendments, for which RINA acts as a Notified Body on behalf of the Italian Administration.

RINA Laboratory is also recognised by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

IMO Fire Test Procedure Code 2010 (FTP Code 2010):

  • Part 1 Non-combustibility test
  • Part 2 Smoke and toxicity test
  • Part 3 Test for "A", "B" and "F" class divisions (decks, bulkheads, ceilings, doors, windows, fire dampers, pipe penetrations and cable transits)
  • Part 4 Test for fire door control systems
  • Part 5 Test for surface flammability (surface materials and primary deck coverings)
  • Part 7 Test for vertically supported textiles and films
  • Part 8 Test for upholstered furniture
  • Part 9 Test for bedding components
  • Part 11 Test for fire-resisting divisions of high-speed craft (non-load-bearing divisions of high-speed craft and load-bearing divisions of high-speed craft, having a structural metal core as presupposed in Part 3 of the IMO FTP Code 2010 for "A" class divisions)

Determination of calorific potential: UNI EN ISO 1716

Simulation of the behaviour of doors and divisions by means of finite element calculations. Prediction of the behaviour of fire division structures (doors, panelling, etc.): the standard applied is finite element calculation according to IMO MSC.1/Circ.1273 and MSC.1/Circ.1319.

Other tests

Thanks to our consolidated experience and our role as an accredited reference laboratory in the testing and certification sector, we also offer the following fire-resistance tests, which are essential in the process of obtaining RINA Type Approval:

  • Small-scale fire-resistance test of Class "A", "B", and "F" divisions (decks, bulkheads, ceilings, doors, windows, shutters, cable-penetration devices and devices for the passage through divisions) – IMO FTP Code 2010, Part 3; RES. 31; MGN 407 (M+F); NC/C.23
  • Single-flame fire-resistance test according to MGN 280 (Annexes 9 and 10)
