Certification
To enable the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using existing refining assets, Petrobras needed to demonstrate full compliance with ISCC CORSIA: a certification scheme recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to monitor, report, and reduce emissions in international aviation.
The challenge was to certify the coprocessing of refined vegetable oils together with fossil feedstock at REDUC, ensuring:
- traceability of raw materials,
- accurate mass balance control,
- sustainability of feedstock origin,
- correct calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and
- compliance with international sustainability criteria.
Achieving ISCC CORSIA certification would enable Petrobras to produce SAF eligible for the global aviation market, positioning the company as a key player in Brazil’s energy transition.
Following an audit conducted by RINA, REDUC obtained its ISCC CORSIA certification on October 14, 2025, covering the coprocessing of refined vegetable oils for SAF production.
The certification included:
- Verification of sustainability criteria (ISCC CORSIA Document 202).
- Verification of traceability and mass balance (ISCC CORSIA Document 201-1).
- Full validation of GHG emissions calculations and material flow tracking.
Two feedstocks were audited:
- Refined soybean oil, coprocessed to replace aviation kerosene (no residue methodology applied).
- Refined technical corn oil, coprocessed to replace aviation kerosene (residue methodology applied).
We evaluated documentation, data traceability, material flows, and emissions calculations to ensure that the process results in SAF eligible under international aviation requirements.
The certificate issued (ISCC-CORSIA-Cert-IT206-00000145) is valid from October 14, 2025 to October 13, 2026, officially recognizing REDUC as a certified coprocessing plant.
The certification enabled Petrobras to:
- Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel compliant with ICAO CORSIA requirements.
- Demonstrate full traceability of the feedstocks used.
- Validate GHG emissions reductions based on certified methodology.
- Expand its portfolio into the international low-carbon aviation fuel market.
The outcome is considered a milestone in Brazil’s SAF supply chain, positioning Petrobras as a leader in the energy transition and low-carbon fuels.
By combining technical rigor, sector expertise and international validation, we ensure that organizations meet global sustainability, traceability, and emissions-reduction requirements, enabling access to regulated markets and accelerating decarbonization strategies.
