RINNO

Tackling energy efficiency in European Housing

Business Time Project Coordinator Funding Scheme

End date: 31/05/2024
RINA Consulting S.p.A. H2020 – Horizon 2020

Challenge

RINNOAround 77% of the EU residential buildings have been constructed before 1990  and roughly 11% of Europe’s population still experiences energy poverty due to poor building quality, especially thermal efficiency.

In this framework RINNO project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement n. 892071 to accelerate (triple) the rate of deep renovation in energy inefficient buildings around Europe, and thereby contribute to reaching the target of 32.5% cent in energy savings set by the EU Green New Deal.

As a result, the following services will be offered:

  • innovative technologies (building envelope solutions, Renewable Energy Sources, hybrid and storage solutions),
  • processes (off-site/ on-site industrialization, optimization, facilitation)
  • business models (based on crowd-equity/ crowd-lending, collaborative financing, energy performance contracting).

This portfolio will be delivered through an operational interface with augmented intelligence and an occupant-centred approach that will streamline and facilitate the whole lifecycle of building renovation (planning and design, retrofitting, operation and monitoring) through a circular economy perspective.

RINNO concept will be tested and demonstrated in four demonstration sites in France, Denmark, Greece and Poland.

Approach

RINA is the project coordinator of RINNO and will perform the overall project management in order to establish and maintain a communication and controlling infrastructure.

Moreover, RINA is in charge of the definition of the stakeholder requirements and market needs to define the stakeholders’ (i.e. tenants, AEC & business), as well as the requirements in terms of buildings renovation expectations facilitating their understanding on the expected benefits that arise from optimizing the process of renovation and the technological solutions applied.

RINA will also develop a techno-economic assessment tool, able to quickly provide an estimation of the renovation project duration and cost (from engineering to procurement and installation), waste creation and management, sustainability of the project and tenants/owners expected disruption.

Finally, RINA will develop the cost-sharing business models in line with the circular economy framework.

Conclusion

RINNO offers applicable novel solutions, referring to all renovation stages, which can facilitate renovation process by reducing resulting costs, disturbance and renovation times while increasing energy efficiency, environmental performance and occupants’ satisfaction.

In that aspect, RINNO inherently contributes to strategic objectives of residential buildings renovation such as creating evidence-based renovation guidance, manage (occupants) behaviour, and de-risking energy efficiency investments.
