RINA North America: providing reliable, safe, and sustainable electrical engineering solutions

RINA North America electrical engineering

Our expertise

Reliability, safety, and sustainability – all key aspects of successful electrical infrastructure.

RINA North America has extensive experience with electrical analysis and design projects and has completed a multitude of designs throughout the country.

Our client list includes Fortune 500 clients, heavy industrial clients, oil and gas refineries, water/wastewater treatment plants, power plants, mining/aggregate sites, metals factories, chemical plants, and many of the nation’s largest utility companies.

We work with our clients to analyze and develop projects in advance, helping them achieve their energy and operational goals with a strong focus on cost, safety, reliability, and schedule performance.

Our projects

A large steel manufacturer's substation was protected by vintage solid-state based power relaying that was vulnerable to nuisance tripping.

We redesigned the protection and control system utilizing state-of-the-art microprocessor SEL relays.

We adapted the existing 138kV switchyard protection and control scheme into an updated implementation, offering improvements to the existing scheme.

Various updates were made for improved safety, access, and quality-of-life, such as separating differential zones, use of relays to gather equipment statuses, and display of statuses at a local HMI through network interconnectivity.

We also procured, provided construction support for, and commissioned the new relay panels.

In an effort to minimize overall cost for the owner, we were able to reuse the existing wiring from the field equipment, interconnect the existing and new wiring, and install new CTs in the switchyard to provide more granular differential protection.

A large steel manufacturer in the United States had critical power pathways that relied on switchgear installed more than 80 years ago.

We designed a new switchgear lineup to replace and enhance the existing gear.

We performed the feasibility study, detailed design (including civil, foundation, structural and electrical design), vendor drawings review, power system studies, design and programming of the protection and control scheme, witness testing, and commissioning services to replace the existing vintage medium voltage switchgear with a modular Power Distribution Center (PDC) and three (3) two-winding step-down transformers.

One of the largest oil refineries in the United States constructed a Naphtha Hydrotreater (NHT) unit to allow for the removal of sulfur and nitrogen compounds.

We provided comprehensive power system studies associated with the electrical installation of this NHT unit.

These power system studies included short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash, load flow, impact motor starting, cable pulling, and cable ampacity, along with programming of protective relay database (RDB) setting files for the new equipment.

We interfaced with all involved parties including third-party design firms, owner construction teams, and other contractors involved with construction.

We prepared design/construction documents and provided construction administration services for a new 138-15kV primary power distribution substation at a large manufacturing facility in Ohio.

We provided full design services, including detailed electrical design (equipment layout, utility interface, conduit and cabling, single- and three-line diagrams, protection and control, etc.), as well as substation enabling design, including site surveying, civil engineering, and structural design.

We prepared design/construction documents and provided construction administration services for a new 138kV-15kV primary power distribution substation as part of phase 1 of a new facility phased build-out.

This substation was designed with provisions for future expansion such that new feeder bays can be added easily with required clearances and spacing requirements to accommodate future phases.

Full design services were performed, including detailed electrical design, site surveying, civil engineering, and structural design.
