Challenge

S-PARCS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no 785134 in order to move from a single-company energy efficient intervention approach to cooperative energy efficient solutions within the framework of industrial parks, thus enabling higher energy savings and the subsequent increase of competitiveness of the companies located in the parks.

S-PARCS will systematically analyse technical, economic, regulatory, legal, organisational, environmental and social barriers to energy efficient park design and operation on all levels and will provide innovative, market-ready solutions to overcome them.

The specific objectives of S-PARCS therefore address the fundamental components required to implement these new and innovative concepts and to facilitate timely actions, to raise widespread awareness and to foster their swift replication. S-PARCS presents a sound concept for reducing energy costs and energy consumption in industrial parks, while, at the same time, increasing renewable on-site energy production.

The pre-assessment of seven “Lighthouse Parks” in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Austria, which participate in the study, has shown a high potential for joint energy actions, many of which are transferrable to the community of S-PARCS Followers in the UK, Sweden, Turkey, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Austria and Norway.

Approach

In the framework of S-PARCS project, RINA leads the identification of cooperative measures and services suitable to different industrial parks and to be promoted among them. In the framework of S-PARCS, We are in charge as well of the park assessment and coordination framework in order to:

  • identify and measure the energy consumption in the parks
  • estimate the impact of energy efficiency measures and joint renewable energy production
  • determine the financial impact on companies participating in joint energy services.

The framework will also fully take into account the diverse nature of the Lighthouse Park partners (park managers, companies in parks as well as owners of parks), which have different points of views, needs and possibilities. By including all different points of view in the framework definition, the options and strategies, which will be defined in S-PARCS, will take the optimisation goals of all stakeholder into account.

Conclusion

S-PARCS will provide the Lighthouse Parks partners with an innovative platform to develop and realise their own visions. In particular, as backbone for the S-PARCS post-project endeavour, the ground for supporting the Follower Community is prepared in order to promote or implement the successfully tested S-PARCS solutions and instruments.

To maximise the impact of the project for the EU community, S-PARCS aligns a diverse and ambitious group of industrial parks that:

  • represents different industrial branches
  • accommodates companies ranging from SMEs to the headquarters of international enterprises
  • represents low-to-medium energy-intensive production processes
  • includes parks that are at different levels of energy efficiency advancements
  • have different experiences with joint energy services and energy cooperation
  • operate in different (regulatory and climate) frameworks.

By combining these distinct features, S-PARCS will produce results that are potentially highly replicable and therefore of highest interest for a large portion of the European industrial park landscape.
