SHOPERA

Energy efficient safe ship operation: support ship operators and yards in the application of improved procedures to the design and operation of ships

Time Project Coordinator Funding Scheme
Start date: October 2013
End date: October 2016
National Technical University of Athens FP7 (Seventh Framework Programme)
Call: FP7-SST-2013-RTD-1

Challenge

SHOPERA will further develop and refine high fidelity, hydrodynamic simulation software tools for the efficient analysis of the manoeuvring performance and safety of ships in complex environmental conditions.
RINA will support ship operators and yards in the application of improved procedures to the design and operation of ships. Results of the project are useful for the EEDI and ‘safe return to port’ calculation.

Approach

Performance of seakeeping/manoeuvring model tests in combined seaway/wind environment for different ship types

  • integration of validated software tools into a ship
  • design software platform and set-up of a multi-objective optimization procedure
  • development of new guidelines for the required minimum propulsion power and steering performance to maintain manoeuvrability in adverse conditions.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s FP7 collaborative project under Grant agreement No 605221.

Conclusion

The SHOPERA project will give a milestone contribution to energy efficient, environmental friendly and safe maritime transport.
