Challenge

Buildings constitute a key factor to transform cities in energy efficient environments and, considering the low rates of new buildings, it is necessary promoting the energy renovation of existing building stock.

This can be achieved thanks to the so called “nearly zero-energy building” (nZEB), which are buildings that have a very high energy performance, and the nearly zero or very low amount of energy required should be covered to a very significant extent by energy from renewable sources, including energy from renewable sources produced on-site or nearby”.

It is therefore imperative to create a large-scale nZEB renovation Market.

Renozeb has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 768718 in order to unlock the nZEB renovation market and develop a new systemic approach to retrofitting that will include innovative components, processes and decision-making methodologies to guide all value-chain actors in the nZEB building renovation process.

Moreover, the main innovative technology of the project will be the modular Plug & Play Façade, which plays a pivotal and technology integrator role in the RenoZEB concept.

The Renozeb approach to deep renovation will be tested on three real residential buildings, in two different climatic zones (Spain and Estonia) and three virtual buildings (Bulgaria, Italy and Greece).

Approach

RINA is supporting the project consortium in the development of a value-based concept and mapping to construct an holistic methodology and decision-making support for near zero energy renovation.

Specifically, RINA will be in charge of the following activities:

  • Design of a value framework for RenoZEB as a new trigger of the positive investor decision, which means defining a value framework that can be applied in making retrofitting decisions for residential buildings by Real Estate investors
  • Definition of guidelines to be followed by designers and constructors to achieve an optimized deep renovation process from all viewpoints
  • Definition of the cost-optimal approach that will be an integral part of the deep retrofitting approach

Finally, RINA will be active in market intelligence activities aimed at continuously monitor the market to detect new trends and possibilities, which will allow the consortium to ensure that RenoZEB will remain at the edge of the innovation and is not overcome by out-of-the-radar market evolution and competition progress.

Conclusion

Renozeb will produce the following main impacts for the EU community:

  • Reduction of at least 60% in energy consumption in order to reach the target of near zero energy compared to the values before renovation, while enhancing indoor environmental quality
  • Decrease of installation time by at least 30% compared to typical renovation process for the building type
  • Demonstration of a high replicability potential and of large market uptake capacity
  • Affordability considering all costs involved, with a payback period below 15 years
  • New generation of skilled workers and SME contractors in the construction sector capable of applying a systemic approach to renovation
