Challenge

The main objectives of the action is to design and to develop a pre-deployment pilot for an interoperable ICT platform (the “MIELE Middleware”) able to interface ICT systems (i.e. single windows, port community systems) in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and Germany(the “National Vertical Pilots”).
The action aims at selecting, at MIELE Middleware’s level, optimal solutions to interoperability obstacles leading to a middleware that will be deployable on both new and existing systems and that will provide interoperable access to data, information and knowledge across heterogeneous platforms and systems (VTS, VTMIS, AIS, RIS, ERMTS, etc).

Approach

RINA supported the Italian Ministry in the action coordination and leading the following activities:

  • MIELE Middleware testing
  • Dissemination
  • Roadmap to MIELE services deployment in Member States & Neighbouring Countries and MIELE training issues.

Conclusion

The major results MIELE produced are:

  • The design of the first and most completed ever ICT system jointly addressing maritime single window, PCS and TOS, currently tendered by Cyprus
  • the establishment of a NMSW in Portugal and its connection to EMSA and PCSs
  • the establishment for the first time, of our ICT connection between Barcelona and Saragossa
    MIELE explored technologies and their applications is leading to relevant results i.e. use of technologies in data exchange communication among Countries referring both to operational purposes and to reporting purposes. This resulted eventually in a series of stand-alone ICT components (the MIELE building blocks) which can be applied to different possible scenarios.
