Datacentre substation design

On behalf of a major international ISP, a global development company commissioned design services for EHV substations to supply datacentres across Europe

Time

Start date: 2016

Challenge

A global development company needed to select a partner who could work with their client to advise on a set of  complex design requirements for the high voltage substations of an international datacentre project.
The partner had to be able to take these concepts through to delivery of a range of power services, support the decision making with key stakeholders across the globe and see the project safely through to completion.

Approach

The RINA team hosted a meeting to review the scope of works. This provided discussion points and areas needing clarity at the very start of the project.
Where possible, a site meeting at the location of the proposed EHV Substation was held so the whole team was aware of the local conditions and any special requirements.
Throughout the duration of the project, we participated in regular online progress meetings, bringing together key people from across the globe to cover every facet of the project.

Conclusion

Our involvement to supply the datacentre facilities resulted in a design that was fully industry compliant, gave thorough consideration to operational and maintenance needs and safeguarded practical, low risk substation installations in multiple locations.
