CREATE

CREATE: Compact REtrofit Advanced Thermal Energy storage

Time Project Coordinator Funding Scheme
Start date: October 2015
End date: September 2019
TNO Horizon 2020
Call:EeB-06-2015: Integrated solutions of thermal energy storage for building applications

Challenge

The main aim of CREATE is to develop and demonstrate a heat battery, i.e. an advanced thermal storage system based on Thermo-Chemical Materials (TCMs), that enables economically affordable, compact and loss-free storage of heat in existing buildings

Approach

RINA will analyse and assess:

  • the current legislative framework of reference for the proposed heat storage system, with the aim of identifying eventual gaps in legislation, therefore addressing policy aspects by developing policy recommendations aimed at stimulating take up of heat storage solutions by the market;
  • norms and standards of reference for the proposed heat storage system, with the aim of identifying eventual gaps in standards, therefore addressing the development of recommendations for new standards stimulating take up of heat storage solutions by the market.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 680450.

Conclusion

The CREATE concept is to develop stabilized storage materials with preserved storage density, improved stability and low price, and package them in optimized heat exchangers, using optimized storage modules. Existing component hardware and infrastructure will be optimally used, to ensure the outcome of the programme. It will be tested as full scale demonstration set-up in a building, with regulatory/normative, economic and market boundaries taken into account.
