Call: Motorways of the Sea call 2011

Challenge

The COSTA Action aims at developing framework conditions for the use of LNG for ships in the Mediterranean, Atlantic Ocean and Black Sea areas. It will result in preparing an LNG Masterplan for short sea shipping between the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean as well as the Deep Sea cruising in the North Atlantic Ocean towards the Azores and the Madeira Island.

Approach

Support MIT (Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport) in the development of the Masterplan for the implementation of LNG as fuel for ships in the Mediterranean, Atlantic Ocean and Black Sea areas.
This Action has received funding from the EU’s Trans-European Network for Transport (TEN-T) Programme under the Motorways of the Sea Call 2011.

Conclusion

The results of the study have promoted the Motorways of the Sea (MoS) sustainability, contributing to the common effort addressing climate change, in particular in view of the forthcoming requirements with respect to the implementation of the requirements of Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention.
Furthermore the Action has contribute to use of new technologies and systems to increase MoS efficiency and effectiveness. The project has complemented the results of the LNG North Sea and Baltic Sea project 2010-EU-21112-S. This has increased the potential of MoS by lowering transport costs and reducing CO2, NOx and SOx emissions, in conjunction with greening the transport corridors and using of LNG as an alternative to marine bunker.
