Challenge

A ship design that provides the best efficiency under a reasonably wide range of operational conditions should be considered an optimum design. The key to meet this challenge is to make use of adaptive and smart materials and structures.

Approach

Revision of current rules and procedures that could be used for the assessment of mechanical, hydrodynamic, fire, thermal, optical properties of smart materials. Safety assessment to provide technical justification for alternative/innovative materials arrangements on board. This project has received funding from the European Union’s FP7 collaborative project under Grant agreement No 314206.

Conclusion

A set of smart design solutions was developed that help to provide optimised properties of ship hulls and outfitting systems at varying conditions. Finally, prototypes have been built and assessed in terms of technical properties, safety issues, and economic and ecologic impact as well.
