Classification is a process aimed at verifying the structural strength and intact stability of the ship’s hull, and the reliability and function of the ship’s machinery and electrical systems, including propulsion and steering. Classification requirements are set by a Classification Society and must conform to the Statutory regulations issued by the
IMO (International Maritime Organization).
The implementation and enforcement of Statutory regulations on safety, security and environmental protection contained within various IMO instruments is under the responsibility of each Flag State, which may delegate its powers to Classification Societies.
RINA SERVICES is a Recognised Organisation, which performs inspections and issues statutory certification: our classification requirements are specified in the “RINA Rules for the classification of ships”.
