Under the latest more stringent requirements about the control of NOx, SOx, CO2 and particulate matter emissions from ships’ exhaust gas, the use of LNG as fuel for propulsion and auxiliary systems on board, instead of the conventional fuel oil, is one of the solutions to be taken in due consideration.
From the point of view of the environmental impact on the air quality and global warming and regulatory compliance, the use of LNG:
- eliminates the SOx emissions
- reduces the NOx emissions by almost 90%
- reduces CO2 emissions significantly (by some 20% to 25%).
From the fuel cost impact, the use of LNG reduces the costs for ship’s fuel, in respect of Low Sulphur MGO.
