Reference market
Operators involved in the production chain (farm to fork) concerned with the production and trade of beef and poultry. The chain is made up of a number of steps:
- holding where the animal was born
- breeding
- slaughter
- cutting plants
- points of sale
Reasons and benefits
- Enables supplementary optional information to be included in the labelling, in addition to the compulsory information, which must be approved in advance by the Italian Ministry for agricultural food and forestry policies (MIPAAF)
- Enables clear information and product traceability throughout the chain to be guaranteed to the consumer
Main aspects
The operator or organisation intending to operate in the voluntary sector must:
- submit their labelling specification for approval to the MIPAAF
- indicate in the specification the measures taken to ensure the accuracy of the voluntary information to be displayed on the label
- undergo checks by an independent body which operates in compliance with the European Standard EN 45011
- indicate on the label, apart from the compulsory/voluntary information, also the name or logo of the operator or organisation and the authorisation number of the specification issued by the MIPAAF.
Possibility to give consumers information, such as:
- category
- information about the animal
- information related to breeding/fattening (i.e. holding)
- name and location of the slaughterhouse
- name and location of the cutting plant
- hanging time (only for bovines)
- breeding techniques
- type of feed
- logo, name of organisation and organisation code assigned by the MIPAAF.
