YESTERDAY RINA is one of the oldest classification societies in the world. It began life with the name ITALIAN REGISTER (REGISTRO ITALIANO) in Genoa in 1861 on the initiative of the “Maritime Health Insurance Association”, as a national body for shipping classification, to cover the risks relative to losses and damage regarding the hull and equipment of sailing ships. The foundation of the ITALIAN REGISTER answers the general requirement of Italian maritime operators to have a national classification society, merging the regional fleets under a single flag and enabling the Italian fleet to have a say in the international maritime world chapter.
